Katrina van Drafter...
...is Katie's new nickname cuz she was drafting an SUV on the RiverRide. First time I ever saw a chick drafting a car on
a group ride. Jeezus. It must be a Raider fan thing.
So I'm moving on with the fall ultra training and it's going good. The goal is 20+ hours a week with back to back long
days on the weekend. Today was 92 miles at 19.2 mph. I drank a 400 calorie recovery drink and two Cokes and ate a
half a pound of pasta and now it's time for pizza, jelly beans, and ice cream. After tomorrow I'll have over 23 hours for
this week. I've been spouting off about how I'm gonna pledge 3000 miles for bike commute month next May so I've
been preparing by getting up early and riding 45 minutes to work in the morning. I'm thinking 50 miles before and after
work should not be a problem. The grocery bill? Not so good. Maybe I can get a sponsor for GU, Cliff Bars and tires.

2008
Yeah, yeah, my season ended yesterday and I'm already scheming on next year.
My wish list:
don't catch every frigging cold bug that passes through this winter
don't become homeless in the middle of the spring build
complete the California Triple Crown Stage Race
podium at the Madera Stage Race
upgrade to cat 2 on the road and at the track
win a State Champion jersey on the road or at the track
start and finish 40+ races
finish a 100 mile mountainbike race, singlespeed of course
coach ten full time clients

newsflash
Katie got third place today in a full field of cat 4 women and now has enough points to upgrade to cat 3. Rock on sista!

stick a fork in me...
Done-again Hills Road Race. Nines guys got away early so the first 30-40 miles was stop and go while the chasers
kept getting shut down by the blockers. Alto Velo got a guy in the break, had two guys patrolling the front, and three
guys sitting in. I sat at the back until the pace started to fade then went to the front to get the chase motivated as the
break had over two minutes and were on the verge of going completely out of site. Once I succeeded in getting a
group of guys to start yelling at the blockers and picking up the pace I went back to my spot as ticket taker. I spent
maybe ten miles at the front riding around threshold...okay 320 watts for thirty minutes, maybe a little too hot but it had
to be done. We caught the break at around sixty miles and two guys countered and got away, I couldn't see who they
were, but one Alto Velo for sure. So I sat at the back and waited to make my move. With ten miles to go I attacked hard
and took three guys with me. Unfortunately all three had teammates in the break so I moved to the back and waited to
get caught and attacked again with seven miles to go. Somewhere in the excitement the field got split in half so at least
the run to the finish wouldn't be too hairball. Not sure what was going on behind me but when we got caught three
guys countered and I could not respond and the race was on for sixth place. I tried to go again from 400 meters but
cramped and fizzled in around 25th place??? It was a hard race and was the most power I've ever done for 3-4
hours...270 watts...ouch.

taper
Okay, it's time to see if this thing works. Three days of easy riding and I should be fresh for tomorrow. I had a few
moments where I was feeling it today but I refrained from pushing. I will have 75 miles to warm-up for my assault
tomorrow. It will be my 25th race of the season, I was hoping to push 40. With a full season at the track next year that
shouldn't be a problem. Wish me luck, I'm going out swinging.

dog days
Pain, fear, loathing, insecurity, disappointment. Don't make me carry another bike upstairs please, my legs are on fire.
I'm up four or five pounds but it feels like twenty. Everything is taking twice as long as normal with three times the
effort. There is a rift in my time space continuum. I'm right on schedule to come crawling out of my skin at about mile
eighty on Saturday. Good nite.

relief
Okay, so tonight was my final race specific workout. I'm taking a full three days to freshen up for the weekend. I was
planning on racing at Hellyer tomorrow night but it looks like my plan fell through. Damn, I miss the track already. I'll be
racing a full season next year including all the big events. This year I think I finally got the feel what it means to grind
out a full season, though it was a season of failed experiments, bad luck, and near misses. I'm really looking forward to
the fall ultra season with the Knoxville and Death Valley doubles on the calendar.

last waltz
Two hours endurance pace tonight. I'm feeling mildly optimistic about the Dunnigan Hills Road Race on Saturday and
am planning on racing one last Wednesday omnium at the track this week. Tomorrow will be some race winning
intervals to see where we're at. I plan to start attacking 20K from the end and won't quit until I get free or blow to bits.

what was that noise?
Oh, that have been me sucking out loud at Esparto TimeTrial. I was five minutes behind Hutchinson, one minute
behind an injured Mike Hernandez, and only mustered a 14th place in the cat 3's...whaaaaa. 25.2 mph at 305 watts,
ho hum. I'm racing Dunnigan Hills next Saturday then I am d-o-n-e done. On to fall endurance riding and better
scenery...

rest day, sort of
No ride today, I want to be able to go full gas in my tt prep tomorrow, then eat zee pasta, put me feets up, and watch
kung fu movie. But seven hours on my feet today didn't really feel like a rest day, though I hope to be heading for a
personal best on Sunday. Well, all I gotta do is finish, cuz it will be my first 18 mile tt, six miles longer than my longest
so far, but you know what I mean. Throw down some heavy wattage for 40 minutes. 320???

hello moto
One hour behind the motor this morning to get the flow of the sweet spot. 27 mph at 280 watts. I walked around work
in a daze the rest of the day. Monday I'll be sprinting around the scooter every 3 minutes for an hour, ouch.

Sunday Sunday Sunday
I spent the evening getting comfy on the time trial bike for the big showdown on Sunday. I skipped the VO2 intervals in
favor of doing a nice and loose 40 minute practice time trial at endurance watts. So, 22 mph, 220 watts, 103 rpm
cadence, 82% heart rate. Tomorrow is one hour behind the moto at 30 mph, sweet, beautiful agony! 18 miles above
threshold on Sunday should be enough for me to get a really goooood buzzz on.
As K39 likes to say "Dino gonna get bike drunk."

the final run
The Cal Cup gets going this week. I'm skipping the Patterson-I-would-be-lucky-to-finish-Pass Road Race on Saturday
in hopes of smoking the Esparto time Trial on Sunday. That will set the tone for the rest of the month. We are prolly
just looking at Dunnigan Hills, San Ardo, and maybe Giro di SF with a couple of other crits thrown in if I'm going good.
Yesterday I did some anaerobic capacity intervals and today was 90 minutes with fifteen at threshold. VO2 intervals on
the tt-bike tomorrow and motor pacing on Thursday. The legs and lungs are feeling better after the beating of Masters
Districts, two times over Monitor, and the ride up to Blue Lakes.
